Short waves

Current K-Earth weekender and morning drive legend Charlie Tuna is now the station "voice" for KDOC-TV.  (all access)

KCSN's signal improvement is targeted for July 1.  In the meantime, Nic Harcourt's weekend show gets revised and will be syndicated and the station's PD is now also interim GM.  (LA Times)

The first shoe has dropped...maybe.  Jose Rios, former ND at FOX 11 has retired from corporate where he was VP of digital news applications. How long before we hear about the new ND at NBC4?  (TV Spy)

In response to the post on May sweeps, nba is fixed asked "Why does KABC always win? ...what are the other stations doing wrong?"  If you're FOX 11, it's stories like this done this way.

On the other hand, FOX 11 did revise their website today.  First blush reaction - it's cleaner, better organized and...no longer features a direct link to Studio 11 LA.

Frosty Stilwell, last heard locally on KFI, has joined Star 101.3 in San Francisco for morning drive.  (radio ink)

Radio ramblings

So, the Kings are in the Finals but you wouldn't know it from their flagship station's website.  Leading up to and hours after tonight's Game #1 and nary a mention of the station's broadcasts anywhere on the home page.  Maybe it's in the sports section...no - in fact, there's not even a hockey category.  Let's try the "Sports Broadcasts" link...here we go, a list of all the Kings broadcasts - for the week of April 9.  How about an extended post-game show - did I miss it?

KTLK's sister AM, KLAC, did a slightly better job in mentioning the Dangerfields...er... Kings on their site (after all, they are a sports station - who will also carry Game #2) and one of their FM's, 98.7, is replacing commercial breaks with live game cut-ins from KTLK along with scoring updates for all games.

Back in April, we speculated about Cumulus's possible plans for KABC/KLOS in light of some anonymous internet domain registrations .  Well, yesterday one of those domains became reality when the Cumulus (aka "Clueuless") station at 106.7 in Atlanta became "All News 106.7."  The domain, "allnews955", which had gone nowhere before, now curiously links to the Atlanta station (there is a mainly talk format in the market on 95.5.) In addition, there is a registration for "allnews790" (which goes nowhere at present.) Someone trying to capitalize on the possibility of a format change, coincidence or ...?

Another great radio site I found in looking into the Cumulus story is formatchange.com. For radio geeks who like to hear how stations sound when they "flip", this is the site for you. Of local interest, you can hear how it sounded 25 years ago when "the Mighty Met" became "the Wave", how KNX-FM switched to KKHR (almost 30 years ago) and when KHJ went country (over 30 years ago.)  Fun stuff.

May sweeps - ABC7 strikes again

Why do other stations even bother anymore?  May sweeps are done and when it comes to total viewers, KABC ran the table once again with Eyewitness News winning every time period in which they have news.

At 5 and 6 a.m., they beat KTLA.  At 5 p.m., they were trailed by KNBC, KCBS and KTTV.  The order was the same at 6 p.m. except KTLA took the fourth spot.  11 p.m. - same story except the trailing order was different - KCBS, KNBC and KCOP.

As for local morning news, KTLA beat GDLA by 52,000.  At 10 p.m., it was KCAL by 15,000 over KTTV with KTLA bringing up the rear.  Still looking for the demo breaks... (Franklin Avenue)

Meanwhile, Univision announced that KMEX was the leader among various local newscasts, regardless of language, when looking at Adults 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.  (TV by the Numbers)
